Short summary
DREI × NULL = NULL develops demonstration buildings designed to achieve climate neutrality across their entire life cycle—from construction and operation to end-of-life—while pioneering new approaches to low-emission, resource-efficient non-profit housing.
Objectives
The R&D project THREE x ZERO = ZERO (original title: DREI x NULL = NULL) aims to realise three demonstration buildings during the project period that achieve net-zero CO₂-equivalent emissions across their entire life cycle—from construction (A) and operation (B) to deconstruction (C).
Because transport-related emissions are not included in the OI3 Index, the most widely used life-cycle assessment method, the project places particular emphasis on regional sourcing of materials and supply chains in order to fully address its goal of climate neutrality.
A key objective of THREE x ZERO = ZERO is to translate the knowledge gained in the project into replicable methods and practical approaches that support the broader implementation of climate-neutral housing.
Methodology
To this end, the consortium combines key competencies from the perspectives of clients, planners, and scientific building analysis, following a five-part working process:
Research: building knowledge through literature review, analysis, and site visits
Planning: developing strategies and defining building parameters that consider the full life cycle
Implementation: supporting the planning and realisation of the buildings
Evaluation: continuous climate-neutrality assessments
Reflection: regular review of decisions within the consortium, supported by input from external experts

Results
Three demonstration projects by the non-profit housing developers EGW in Bad Vöslau, Schönere Zukunft in Heiligeneich/Atzenbrugg, and Alpenland in Göblasbruck/Wilhelmsdorf are currently under construction.
Based on these projects, replicable methods are being developed to achieve climate neutrality across the entire life cycle of buildings.
